Parade

The program for May 17th 2009 in Oslo is almost ready! Here are the highlights.

  • 0915 - 1000 - folk dancing from Egertorget towards the palace
  • 0930 - 1000  Royal Guard's drill down Karl Johan
  • 1000 - 1300 - CHILDREN's PARADE up to the Palace, where the Royal family is standing on the balcony waving
  • 1200 - guns at Akershus fortress firing
  • 1400 - the Norwegian student choral society sings at Aulatrappen in front of the old University
  • 1500 - graduate parade (Russetoget), starts at Oslo Handelsgymnasium
  • 1814 - folk dance prom outside the old University - folk dancing for everyone, this is great fun!

The Folk Museum has free entrance on May 17th (although all exhibitions are closed,  you can still soak up the atmosphere between the old houses) with a children's parade starting at 12 (noon). There are lots of games and fun for children.

At Kuba there are free concerts and festivities from 1500.

There is a special church service in Trefoldighetskirken at 1500 as well.

Now if you don't want to get up too early or have a hard time deciding what to see, there are 5 things you simply cannot miss:

  1. Royal family and the children's parade
  2. The graduates' parade
  3. Eat a hotdog and an ice cream
  4. Look at the National costumes
  5. Listen to the National anthem

Most important: Have fun, look after your belongings and take loads of photos! It's a memorable day that most Norwegians love. Have a sneak preview on YouTube, for instance this one with English commentary, this one from the graduate parade (russetoget), one with the royal family, this one with bands playing, the Royal Guard (watch the whole thing!!) or this one from London.

The latest weather reports state that the weather will be sunny and between 10 and 18 degrees celcius. Keep your fingers crossed!
